Top Video Games That Will Help Improve Your Hunting Skills

Posted by John McAdams - Jan 28, 2015

Unfortunately, it is not possible for hunters to spend all of their time in the woods. Luckily, there are lots of hunting video game options out there to satisfy that hunting “itch” without leaving the comfort of home. They vary in price as well as in the realism of the hunting experience provided, so there should be something on this list for virtually any hunter who enjoys video games. Here are my picks for the top hunting games to play this year.

1. Deer Drive
Deer Drive is available on Nintendo Wii and allows 1-4 players to play at once. The game includes over a dozen different animals to hunt and the players must complete their hunting objectives while surviving potentially dangerous encounters with moose and grizzly bears.
Though the game is more of an arcade-style shooting game than a realistic simulation of hunting, that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. Gameplay is pretty simple: shoot the best trophies out of the herds of animals that run past your stand. Though single player mode is admittedly loads of fun, the multiplayer mode is probably the most popular and allows for both cooperative and competitive play between the players.

2. Deer Hunter 2014
Deer Hunter 2014 is available for free to download and play on both iOS and Android. Players have a certain amount of time that they can play for free, or they can pay to play without breaks or to upgrade their equipment.

The game features over 100 species of animals from all over the world that can be hunted, along with a wide variety of hunting locations and different pieces of equipment. Deer Hunter 2014 also offers the ability to play in cooperative mode with other players. While this game is slightly more realistic than Deer Drive, it is still closer to an arcade-style shooting game than a hunting simulation.

3. Cabela's Big Game Hunter Pro Hunts
Available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Wii UTM, Cabela’s Big Game Hunter Pro Hunts is one of the most advanced hunting games currently available on the market. Over the course of the game, the player can receive advice from Wade Middleton, Jim Shockey and Ralph & Vicki Cianciarulo, four famous and knowledgeable professional hunters.

There are four different hunting areas located in North America that are featured in this game and the player can hunt virtually any species of North American big game. This game also features extremely realistic ballistics and a very cool “X-Ray Camera” that lets the player see where their shot hit on the animal and determine exactly what damage the projectile did. Cabela’s Big Game Hunter Pro Hunts really strives for realism and seems to be a good balance between being realistic enough to be challenging, but not so realistic that it is impossible to play.

4. TheHunter.com
With an immense in game world containing seven different hunting reserves, theHunter offers a gigantic and immersive virtual experience encompassing North American and European environments. Designed for PC users, the game is free to download and play initially, and the player can pay to unlock additional weapons, species to hunt, and new hunting areas. The game is also incredibly open ended, offering almost limitless options for the player to pursue.

TheHunter is hailed for being just about as realistic as a video game can be: the animals in the game can detect the player through their senses of smell, hearing, and sight, just like in real life, so the player must be as stealthy as possible to avoid detection. The game also has incredibly detailed weather conditions and features realistic ballistics.
